Every autumn, six miles of the Lancashire coastline turn into Britain's most famous free light show. The Blackpool Illuminations draw millions of visitors to the Promenade each year, so doing a little planning is important to avoid big crowds. This guide covers the 2026 dates, daily lighting times, the route, and the best ways to experience the lights without the stress.

What are the Blackpool Illuminations?

Since 1879, Blackpool has lit up its seafront with electric light and artistic displays, earning its reputation as "the greatest free light show on Earth." Every autumn and winter, the illuminations transform the promenade into a six-mile trail of colour, glitter and excitement.

When do the Blackpool Illuminations start in 2026?

2026 dates and Switch-On event:

The 2026 season begins on Friday, 4th of September with the official Switch-On, an outdoor celebration at the Tower Festival Headland. This year, it’s hosted by Paddy McGuinness, with performances from The Feeling, Five and Lucy Spraggan.

The full display, running the traditional route from Starr Gate to Red Bank Road, stays lit nightly until Sunday, 1st of November. From 2nd of November, a shorter stretch between Pleasure Beach and Gynn Roundabout continues, joined by Christmas by the Sea from 20th of November, with both running through to Sunday, 3rd January 2027.

Blackpool Illuminations times and daily lighting schedules:

Daily switch-on times shift throughout the season in line with sunset. In early September, expect the lights on from around 8pm to 10.30pm during the week, and until 12.00am on weekends. As the nights draw in through the winter, the lights come on progressively earlier. For exact nightly times, check VisitBlackpool's lighting schedule closer to your visit.

Blackpool Illuminations map and route breakdown

The full route runs for around six miles along the Promenade, from Starr Gate in the south to Bispham and Red Bank Road in the north. Along the way you'll pass Pleasure Beach, the South, Central and North Piers, the Comedy Carpet, and the Blackpool Tower itself, along with a string of impressive light features dotted along the seafront. Most visitors take about 1.5–2 hours to walk the main stretch at a relaxed pace.

Best way to see the Blackpool Illuminations

Walking the Promenade:

Walking among the Blackpool lights is free, brings you right up close, and lets you dodge the worst of the traffic. Be careful to wrap up warm as the autumn sea breeze can be quite chilly after dark.

Illuminated Heritage Tram tours:

Riding one of the classic decorated trams, like the Western Train or the Battleship tram, is an especially enchanting and romantic way to take in the lights, perfect for a cozy date. These get booked up quickly, so make sure to plan ahead.

Driving and open-top bus routes:

Driving the Promenade after dark or taking an open-top bus tour is a relaxed option, but weekend traffic is very slow and often around the same speed as walking pace. Stick to the nearside lane where possible while driving.

Do you need tickets for the Blackpool Illuminations?

Viewing the lights along the public Promenade is completely free, no Blackpool Illuminations tickets required! The exceptions are the official Switch-On concert (a public ballot with a small admin fee, plus a paid Golden Circle upgrade for front-of-stage access), VIP tram tours, and indoor attractions nearby such as the Tower or Winter Gardens

Tips for planning trips to the Blackpool Illuminations

Avoiding weekend traffic:

Saturday nights are by far the busiest. If you’re flexible, visiting Sunday to Thursday means noticeably less traffic and a much calmer walk along the Promenade.

Combining the lights with local attractions:

Pair your evening illuminated walk with a daytime visit to one of Blackpool's other attractions. The Blackpool Tower Circus, the Winter Gardens, or the Grand Theatre all make for a full day (and night) out.

The lights usually turn off at 10.30pm on weekdays and at 12am on weekends. Times may vary, so double-check VisitBlackpool's lighting schedule to be sure.

Can you drive through the illuminations?

Yes, the Promenade stays open to drive on throughout the season, although expect the traffic to be very slow on weekends.
