Entry tips, ice skating, and Southbank Centre Winter Festival

‍

‍

‍

‍

Entry needs a pre-booked timed ticket: off-peak slots are free, while standard and peak slots (mostly evenings and weekends) cost extra, and skating is usually booked separately. For a calmer, free-to-wander alternative, Southbank Centre’s riverside Winter Market typically opens in early November and offers a lovely date-night stroll along the Thames.

Historic market escapes: Bath, York, and Winchester

‍

‍

‍

Prefer fairytale scenery to big-city crowds? These three historic cities bring festive charm to medieval and Georgian streets. The best Xmas markets in the UK aren’t always the liveliest ones.

Festive atmosphere in medieval streets and abbey grounds

‍

‍

‍

‍

Bath (26 November to 13 December) lines its gorgeous streets with free-to-enter chalets around the Abbey and Roman Baths, arguably the best Christmas market for couples. This can also be paired with a day of sightseeing in this beautiful town.

‍

‍

‍

York’s St Nicholas Fair (12 November to 21 December) fills Parliament Street and St Sampson’s Square, and is worth visiting to look at the beautiful lights illuminating the fairytale streets.

‍

‍

‍

Winchester’s Cathedral market (20 November to 22 December) is a cosy, free day out in the historic Cathedral Close. It’s super romantic, so perfect for couples!

Smart tips for visiting Christmas markets on a budget

‍

‍

‍

‍

Especially the best Christmas markets in UK cities get packed at weekends, so visit on weekday mornings for shorter queues and often cheaper stays. Bring cash for smaller stalls, as they often don’t take card. Also, pack a flask of something warm, as you will be outside in the cold for a while. Last but not least, it’s often better to take public transport, as city centres get busy and some markets like Birmingham’s sit inside Clean Air Zones.
